Kyubi, the Golden Kitsune
A white fox sits on a dark rock above the mist, and nine golden tails unfurl around it like brushstrokes of light. In Japanese folklore a kitsune grows wiser with every tail, and only the oldest fox spirits wear nine. Behind it, a torii gate and a small pagoda keep watch at the edge of the pine forest. The red seal reads 狐 (kitsune, 'fox'), and the characters above it 九尾 (kyubi, 'nine tails'). Part of the Sumi and Gold collection, where the art of Japanese ink (sumi-e, 墨絵) meets gold.
