Zen Frog on a Golden Lotus
A frog sits on a gold-veined lotus with its hands pressed together and its eyes half closed, while a thread of smoke rises above it in slow golden spirals. Around two centuries ago the Zen monk Sengai drew a frog in meditation and wrote beside it, half in jest: 'If sitting in meditation makes one a Buddha...' The frog, who sits all day, finishes the thought. The red seal reads 禅 (zen). Part of the Sumi and Gold collection, where the art of Japanese ink (sumi-e, 墨絵) meets gold.
